"Little did I know it would be life changing! I’ve been back for more than 2 weeks now and I still think about the trip and my friends that I met on the trip throughout the day. Every day we saw Parrots, Macaws, Trogons, Jacamars, Woodcreepers and Tanagers (and monkeys)."

" It was such a wonderful experience, the group gelled quickly, we saw many (about 350) bird species and took lots of photographs and sound recordings."

Sisterhood's Behind The Scene

Me

Hi. I'm Maira Oakar, the founder of Sistehood Birding!

Maira’s love for nature runs as deep as the roots of the trees she grew up around. Born in Brazil, she was raised on her family’s sprawling farms, where the wild was her playground. As a girl, she’d kick off her shoes just to walk barefoot to feel the earth beneath her feet, chase waterfalls (very common in her home state) , and lose herself, sometimes for hours watching birds and insects behave. Her connection to the natural world wasn’t just a spark—it was a wildfire.

With a degree in Biology, Maira dove headfirst into a career working with wild mammals, birds, and local communities. She didn’t just study nature; she lived it, shoulder-to-shoulder with families facing daily challenges. Her passion for sustainability led her to participate in projects that empowered communities to thrive alongside the wild spaces they called home.

Then love brought a new adventure. After marrying Jeffrey Oakar, a photographer from California that lived in Brazil for almost 15 yeas, Maira traded Brazil’s lush forests for Colorado’s rugged peaks. Nearly a decade later, their shared love for capturing the world’s beauty through a lens has only deepened. Maira, now a skilled photographer herself, founded Sisterhood Birding with a bold mission: to uplift and empower women across the globe in the vibrant world of birding.

Through Sisterhood Birding, Maira invites women to join her in celebrating the thrill of spotting birds, the joy of connecting with nature, and the power of building a community that soars together. Her story is one of passion, purpose, and an unshakable bond with the wild—and she’s ready to share it with the  female world.
